I love to play poker! Once in a while I’ll even get lucky too. I’ve played at all the casinos in Las Vegas I’ve even played at some in California a time or two. One thing I’ve never played is a home game. I always opted for the casino because there is freedom to play more games and or tournaments. This week I found a home game on a site called meet up. I was on there searching for a group that I could shoot the junk with over what I really like, Adsense. I typed in poker just to see what was there, I didn’t expect much, I mean living in Las Vegas, poker at any level is available at just about any casino in town.
Anyway, I found a couple of pages offering a home game, these pages on meetup also tell a lot about the game and the players. There were actually 3 home game pages that I found. One was near my home and I thought ok, I could maybe play this one. Two were a little further away but still close enough to give it a try if I decided to. I looked at the stats of the one near my house, it looked like a new group, they only had a couple of meet ups and only 4 attended one and 6 attended the next. Not much of a game so I kept looking not really serious about showing up.
I put the thought on hold for a while I did some other work. Well it turned into days and then one day I got an email saying there was a game coming up. Of course the game had to be 20 miles away. The money wasn’t going to be great for winning but it wasn’t a big investment either. It was only a $10 dollar buy in with no re-buys or add ons. I figured I would get some experience playing tournament style which I needed and am getting better at all the time. I love cash games and always thought I liked them better than tournament style. I just could wrap my head around the popularity of tournament poker. Every time I would be playing in a cash game and see the mass exodus to the tournament tables I would wonder why they waste their time. After playing a few and getting more serious about tournament play, I can see the appeal now. It’s a whole new way of playing poker and it takes all the concentration and luck you can muster because there is no coming back from a mistake.
Anyway I began this tournament with good cards and they just kept coming. Normally when I’m playing start the game with great cards and winning. I know that my luck can not keep up for the whole tournament and they have to turn, it seems like that anyway. Also if I get good cards in the beginning it seem to make me a little cocky and over confident. Well this time they just kept coming, I do have to say that I stole quite a few pots too. In the end, I was up and down and almost out at one point but I was able to fight back and win the tournament to pick up the top prize. What great feeling it is to win a tournament even if the pot is only $125 and even if the players are not real experienced. I love poker and I’m sure I always will, it’s something that just keeps going and going and I’ll probably keep doing to these home games, I like the atmosphere and I get to practice for a small amount of money.
